Living with HIV can be emotionally challenging. People with HIV are more likely than the general population to experience depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and other mental health conditions. According to the CDC, depression affects approximately 20–37% of people with HIV — two to three times the rate in the general population.
Mental health conditions can make it harder to take HIV medication consistently, attend medical appointments, and engage in other health-promoting behaviors. Addressing mental health is therefore an essential part of comprehensive HIV care.
In addition to professional support, self-care strategies can help manage mental health. These include regular physical exercise (which has been shown to reduce depression and anxiety), maintaining social connections, practicing mindfulness or meditation, getting adequate sleep, and limiting alcohol and drug use.
